The raised fo’c’sle became a distinctive characteristic of the destroyers that were built for the Royal Navy in the first half of the twentieth century.

Cavalier ’s hull incorporates a number of changes that were introduced to the standard war production destroyer’s hull design before the Admiralty placed orders for the 3rd Emergency Flotilla. These included the incorporation of a transom stern to improve the performance at higher speeds.

The hatch situated between the two scuttles is an escape hatch. 6in Roman numerals can be seen below the hatch which indicate the ship’s draught towards the stern. On some ships they would have been cut in by chisel or centre punch, whereas metal figures were used for this purpose on Cavalier ’s hull. This image shows that Cavalier currently draws 10ft aft.
